There are two kinds of people in the overland world: the ones who finance a $15k trailer, and the ones who look at a pallet of laser-cut steel and think, “yeah, I can turn that into something.” This one's for the second group.
What shows up at your door
The DIY trailer kit arrives as a pallet of laser-cut, heavy-gauge steel — every piece cut, notched, and tabbed. The tab-and-slot design means the chassis self-fixtures: parts key into each other square, so you're not fighting a tape measure and a prayer at midnight. If you've ever assembled anything where hole A actually lined up with slot B, you know the feeling we're chasing.
The footprint logic
The bed is sized to a Tacoma bed footprint (52.5″ × 73.5″). That's deliberate: your existing bed accessories carry over, your tire track roughly matches the tow rig on tight trails, and the proportions tow like a shadow instead of a sail.
What you need
- A welder and the ability to run a decent bead (MIG is plenty)
- A grinder, clamps, and a level slab
- A free weekend or two, depending on how often your buddies “help”
You bring the welder and the beer money; the kit brings everything already cut square. Axle, suspension, and wheels are your call — that's the point. Build the running gear to match how you actually wheel.
Why a kit and not a finished trailer?
Because shipping a welded trailer costs almost as much as the trailer, and because you shouldn't pay fab-shop labor rates for welds you can lay yourself. Mostly, though: the trailer you built outlasts the trailer you bought, because you know every joint in it.
